Introduction to this website
".. my health was fine - until the moment when some little biological process in my body, for reasons that are still unknown, began producing one-celled antibodies with a pathological tendency to infiltrate and destroy the tissues that surround the fibres of the peripheral nervous system, and I began having problems swallowing my fried potatoes and then with not being able to take my sweater off..."

- Joseph Heller, author, recovered from GBS

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), or polyradiculitis, as it is more commonly called in Scandinavia, is a rare disorder that causes inflammation of the peripheral nerves. The course of the syndrome varies from person to person, making it difficult to diagnose. It affects a very small number of people in the world, but causes great suffering and frustration to them and their families. There is no cure for the disorder, whose symptoms range from pain and abnormal sensations, to weakness, paralysis and permanent disability. Spontaneous recovery occurs in most patients.
GBS has several variants - CIDP, AMAN, AMSAN, CIDP, MMN, etc.

This website provides quality information to patients and health providers, as well as a collection of real-life case histories detailing the various manifestations of GBS, treatment strategies and their results. This information is meant solely for general informational purposes. It cannot, and is not meant to, replace professional advice and treatment, or be a basis upon which to diagnose or treat patients. If you suspect you may have GBS, you are strongly advised to seek qualified medical attention at once.
