Over the years, I have received several queries
about a possible connection between anthrax shots and GBS. Many
of these came from persons connected to the US military, where such
shots were mandatory. This piece of news should be of interest!
" Judge Halts Forced US Military
Anthrax Shots "
December 22, 2003
A federal judge has recently ruled that the U.S.
military cannot force soldiers to be vaccinated against anthrax
against their will, without a special order from President Bush.
At issue is a law passed in 1998 that bars the military
from giving troops experimental, or "investigational,"
drugs without their consent or a presidential waiver.
Since 1998, several million doses of various vaccines
are administered to U.S. troops annually, to protect them against
disease and bioterrorism threats. An estimated 900,000 troops have
been subjected to the mandatory anthrax vaccination.
Many of the anthrax vaccines have experienced side effects, some
of which resemble Gulf War Syndrome. 84% of personnel who had anthrax
vaccine shots from 1998-2000 had side effects or reactions. At least
3 reports of Guillain-Barre syndrome after an anthrax vaccination
has been filed.
The US government contends the vaccine is very safe,
is not experimental, and can be used against airborne anthrax or
anthrax absorbed through the skin. There may however be rare severe
side effects such as dangerous allergic reactions. A product leaflet
stating adverse reactions occurred in 0.2% of cases was recently
revised to read 5-35%, with at least six deaths linked to the vaccine.
This ruling is important to the hundreds of service
members who refused to take the anthrax vaccine, and were disciplined
or discharged. Asked if these punishments would be reconsidered,
Defense Secretary Rumsfeld declined to comment.
Reactions among US troops currently in Iraq are
mixed.
